When you start talking about the top video games or the best video games there are several things one has to consider. Are the top games those that have been around the longest, those that people are currently playing the most or something else entirely? Ask 3 different people and you will likely get 3 different answers for which video game is best. That being said here are brief reviews of 3 of the top video games out there today.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a first-person shooter video game released in 2019. It is not the newest installment in the Call of Duty franchise but is currently the most played, for good reason. The sound-effects in this game are spectacular and the look and animations are excellent. The premise of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has a CIA Officer and British SAS joining forces with rebels from the fictional country of Urzikstan. The game is set in modern times and tries to take a more realistic and tactical approach.
The single-player campaign in Modern Warfare has two main playable characters. They are Alex, a CIA operative and Kyle Garrick, a soldier in the British SAS. You will also play briefly as Farah Karim, a rebel freedom fighter. The game gun-play is solid and similar to other offerings in the Call of Duty series. Players can carry two guns of any type in addition to a lethal and non-lethal throwable. The guns picked up in the field have a randomized set of attachments. Pressing the mount button allows you to lean out from cover using the mouse so you can limit your exposure. The single player campaign is relatively short and can be completed in 6 to 8 hours.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has plenty of multiplayer modes. The menu has a quick play option that contains most of the popular modes, while modes that are new or have been updated can be found outside the quick play menu. An exciting addition is a Ground War mode which is similar to Domination except the map is bigger and there are 32 players per team. An additional feature of the mode is that vehicles such as tanks and choppers can be used. Between new modes and old favorites there is no shortage of choices. Every weapon in Modern Warfare can be leveled up, which allows more attachments to be unlocked, so weapons can be altered in numerous ways. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a great game whether you prefer single campaigns or multiplayer
League of Legends League of Legends or LoL was released back in 2009 but still remains one of the most popular video games with around 115 million people playing every year. LoL is a multi-player online battle arena and is free to play. In League of Legends default mode, “Summoner’s Rift”, 2 teams of 5 players each compete against each other. Every player chooses a character or “champion” and each champion has unique abilities. As of now there are over 150 champions for players to select from. The goal of each team to is to destroy their opponent’s nexus, located in their base, which is protected by 3 lanes of towers. Champions start a match at level one without any items so they lack the power to attack the enemy base.
In order to increase their level a player has to overcome AI controlled minions which earns them both gold and experience points. Gold earned can be used to purchase items from the store located at each team’s base. Items increase a champion’s power. Experience points earned and items purchased are only good for the current match and don’t carry over. Every match begins with champions at level 1. Matches become more intense as champion’s levels increase and eventually players can begin to assault and destroy towers. A key to LoL play is to select champions with abilities that complement your teammates and that match up well against your opponents so that you can nullify their attacks and overcome their defenses. Good teamwork is essential to winning matches.
League of Legends is constantly expanding with new characters being added on a regular basis. It is relatively easy to pick up the basics but can take some time to become a good player. Regardless of your skill level it is exciting and fun to play and will provide many hours of enjoyment.
World of Warcraft World of Warcraft is an MMORPG from Blizzard that was launched in 2004 and is still going strong today. WoW hasn’t stood still and numerous expansions have been added over the years. The game offers a huge amount of content that provides users with many options. You can team up with other players to conduct raids or face off against other players in arenas. For those who enjoy something a bit less intense you may choose to spend time exploring or collecting pets.
Shadowlands which is the latest expansion for World of Warcraft was recently released and made some significant changes to the game. Shadowlands takes place in WoW’s after-life and introduces 5 new zones and 10 new dungeons as well as a dungeon that changes every time you enter. A new leveling system has also been put in place that cuts the number of levels in half from 120 to 60. New players begin on a starter island until reaching level 10, and then go to Battle for Azeroth for levels 10 – 50 before proceeding to Shadowlands. Established players can play where they like. Many World of Warcraft players take leveling up seriously to the point of using services like Ask Boosters to help them level up and get better equipment faster.
The release of Shadowlands has rejuvenated World of Warcraft and adds even more to an already massive world. Both established and new players will find that World of Warcraft is still one of the best MMORPG out there and will provide hours of fun for casual and hardcore players.
